Message from Ian Davis - Acting Executive Director - Catholic Education - Diocese of Cairns
Farewell Bishop James
This week marks a major milestone in the history of the Catholic Church in Cairns, with the retirement of our long-serving Bishop, James Foley.
Bishop James has been a dedicated servant of the Catholic community in Far North Queensland for 30 years and has always shown a great interest in our schools. His commitment to the young people of the diocese - and to both their education and spiritual formation - has always been clearly evident. He has been a welcome and thoughtful presence in our schools since his ordination as our Bishop in 1992. Much has happened and changed since then, but Bishop James has been a constant source of wisdom and encouragement to us. We will miss him.
After his final Mass last Sunday evening, Bishop James was congratulated and thanked for all he has done, and he ceremonially laid his crozier on the altar of St Monica's Cathedral, signifying the end of his formal role as our shepherd.
Our Catholic Education community sincerely thanks Bishop James for his guidance and stewardship over three decades, and we pray that he has a happy and healthy retirement.
The Vicar for Education and Parish Priest of Innisfail, Fr Kerry Crowley, has been named by Pope Francis to be the Administrator of the Diocese until a new Bishop is selected.

Cyber Safety - https://www.esafety.gov.au/young-people
The Australian Government esafety commission has a has a dedicated section for our young people to keep safe online. One section is on Being an Upstander.
Be an upstander - An upstander is someone who chooses to support the person being bullied and takes action. If you feel safe and comfortable to do so, there are different ways to be an upstander.
What is an upstander?
If you see something that is not OK, like bullying behaviour online, you have a choice: support the person who is being bullied, or sit back and do nothing.
Not doing anything, and choosing to keep scrolling can feel like the easier option. Some people may feel they don't have the courage to step in, or are concerned that they’ll be attacked for speaking up. But there are different ways to support someone being bullied, and help them feel less isolated, while keeping yourself safe. Deciding to take action to support others is called being an upstander.
For more information on how to be an Upstander follow the link

Week 8 was a busy week for thirty three students who participated in the Gateway to Industry (hospitality) program (GIP). Over three days students learnt the coffee industry standards and protocols for coffee treatment and preparation to prepare the best cup of coffee possible. MSB staff and teachers tested many cups of coffee to assist with quality assurance processes. At the end of the program students have completed 3 modules that are part of Tourism and Hospitality studies: “Prepare & Serve Espresso Coffee (SITHFAB005)”, “Use of hygienic practices for food safety (SITXFSA001)” and “Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITSS00055)”, providing them with employment opportunities now and into the future.
The event culminated in the trainers and the students involved creating a culinary indigenous morning tea for the entire College. Congratulations to all staff and students involved.
The end of the year is fast approaching for all students, none more-so than our Year 12 students who are coming to the end of their secondary education journey at MSB. The 2022 external assessment dates have been set by the QCAA (Qld Curriculum & Assessment Authority). MSB supports students by providing scheduled revision times for General and General (Extension) subjects prior to the date of the exam. This external assessment timetable and the revision schedule has been shared in the school calendar for your reference.
We wish all students well as they sit their final high school exams.

Gossip and Yarn Carrying
People love a story! We create them, we listen to them and we sometimes share them.
Stories can be entertaining, educational… and sometimes they can be destructive of others.
Members of the Wellbeing Team have been putting time and effort into stories that have caused anger and hurt amongst several members of our student community. Someone starts a rumour and it grows until it has a life of its own. Then other friends or family get involved. Or it may have a kernel of truth to it, but by the time it has been shared across groups and Social Media, all truth has been distorted.
Carrying yarns or gossip doesn’t do anyone any good. Some do it to exert some power and control; usually reputations and friendships are damaged and restorative conversations are needed.
It is best to keep out of others business and only say things that are kind. It’s really that simple.

Religion
Year 12s have been learning how to find deeper meaning in sacred stories by analysing them using the 3 Worlds of the Text. The world behind the text is a window where we look back to the past, to what the world was like for the people who first told these stories. The world of the text is a picture. This picture shows us the story as it is and what it tells us through its literary features. The world in front of the text is a mirror. In this mirror we reflect on what this story could mean for us today and how we could respond to its message.
We have enjoyed listening to and learning from the different stories that have been presented.

English & Humanities
In Week 7, a talented team of eight writers and artists took on the challenge of writing, illustrating and publishing a book in just twelve hours. Write a Book in a Day is an event that our most passionate writers and artists look forward to every year. It’s hard work but immensely satisfying when you read the finished book and see what you have achieved. This year, we had a very challenging set of parameters to include – a trapeze artist, a helicopter pilot and a day-care centre amongst others. The team skilfully managed to incorporate these into a powerful story of love and friendship set in an apocalyptic future. The team is continuing to raise sponsorship for the event as a fundraiser for the charity The Kids’ Cancer Project, which arranges for copies of the finished books to be donated to kids in hospitals. You can sponsor our team here. Thanks to all the teachers who allowed the students to miss a day of school so that they could take part.

For Biology this term, 9 Science have been learning about how our body maintains Homeostasis and how the different body systems work together. During the term both classes were able to get into the lab almost every week to dissect a different organ and even got to look at what we call a ‘pluck’. The Pluck consisted of the tongue, throat, lungs, kidney, gallbladder, and heart. Students were fascinated to see the body systems together. Miss Angela was able to get us cows' hearts which were huge! Students have been enjoying a very hands-on term.
This year junior maths students have been working hard to improve their Numeracy and Maths skills by using a software called Mathspathway. Mathspathway allows students to work on what they are currently ready to learn and what will be accessible to them. In class 7B we have seen huge growth this year already, with some students levelling up twice already! Levelling up is equivalent to showing a years’ worth of growth. Students are able to participate in hands on activities, play to learn scenarios and differentiated questioning in order to improve their Maths skills.

The Arts
This week in the Art Room we have Tanya Price visiting. She is a famous Indigenous Artist from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Students were fascinated watching Tanya paint. She is also working with our senior students to create a painting for Girls Boarding and a large scale NAIDOC painting. Miss Tray is continuing to teach all classes whilst Tanya works. We are very fortunate to have Tanya who is Caitlyn Price's mum working alongside our students. We are truly blessed :)
Daniel Wallwork (Wally) is a Gallery Artist, Aerosol Artist, Public Artist, Exhibition/event coordinator, Curator, Artsworker, Automotive Spray-painter and small business owner. Last week, Wally conducted a series of workshops with Year 7-12 Visual Art students. Year 11 & 12 Visual Arts in Practice and Visual Art students engaged in a unit of work that explored creating a mural, Art as Code and Art as Alternate. In 2022, the school recognised a need to inspire students in boys boarding through ‘positive affirmations and feel good images to provide students with a sense of pride and place’. The concepts followed through in topography, stencilling, visual imagery and symbolism to create meaning. Students developed designs (based on these themes). The designs were transferred onto aluminium boards that were cut into organic and circular shapes to follow the staircase around. Photos to come after the holidays.
Students experimented with a variety of materials, to understand proportions through marking up and scaling their designs onto different grounds (literacy and numeracy). Students learnt skills and techniques in painting that are transferable in different industries within the arts once leaving school. Wallwork's previous visits to MSB have demonstrated that he is instantly recognised by students for his inspirational murals at AFL House, Wujal Wujal, Malanda, Atherton, Yungaburra, Hopevale, Kowanyama, Wonga Beach, Tagai College, Trinity Beach and Woree Skate Park and more. Wally is valued within the communities. We noticed the high energy created by Wally’s visit inspired the natural talents of students. Doriah, Tayiesha, Caitlyn, Melinda and Aaliyah demonstrated such commitment to the 3-day project and should be commended for their efforts.

Special mention must go to Mayleen King who stopped during her 1500m race to help a fellow competitor who had fallen, commendable sportsmanship!
Two students have been selected to join the Peninsula Track & Field team to compete in Brisbane in mid-October – Melinda Obah & Quentin Shortjoe.

Year 9 Expedition
Year 9 Expedition
On Tuesday 16th of August, Grade 9 split up and set off to camp in the bush for the next three nights. On the first day, we walked for about 5km along a dirt road with our packs, carrying all the food we would need for the next four days. For lunch, we stopped at Davies Creek, splashed in the water, and ate wraps. While admiring a view of the falls, there was a dramatic moment as a stick of salami rolled off the cliff, everyone watching it fall into the river below. The campsite was amazing, with a beautiful view of the creek, rocks to climb on, flat ground to sleep on, and hundreds and HUNDREDS of bandicoots. We had to hang our food in the trees at night so that they wouldn’t eat it, and if you woke up in the middle of the night, you could hear tiny feet pattering around the campsite. The next day, we hiked up Kahlpahlim Rock, the highest mountain in the area. It was tough, but bearable, as we didn’t have to carry our packs, and the views from the top were worth it. Everyone collapsed into their sleeping bags when we got back, ready to stay another night at the same campsite. The third day was the toughest walk yet, as we would have to walk through the bush with our packs. Everyone was so burnt out and tired, as we had to walk further than we thought we would due to a mountain bike race happening the next day. We were grateful to be staying at a nice campsite the next night, with everyone sleeping on the undercover wooden platform, rather than under separate tarps. In the morning, we left our things at the day-use area at Emerald Creek Falls and spent the rest of the day swimming at the creek until the bus showed up. Expedition was an amazing experience, as it brought everyone closer together as friends, and challenged us to try our hardest to keep walking, even when we were hot and tired. Overall, all the girls had an awesome time, and no one regretted going on their first expedition.

BLA CAREERS EXPO
What subjects should I be choosing for next year? Where do I see myself in 10 years? What field of work am I interested in? These were some of the questions posed by Year 10 and 11 students when they attended the BLA Careers Expo in Cairns on Thursday 25 August. Information stalls from training organisations, the armed forces, trades and universities provided students with many answers and gave them the opportunity to talk with people who work in these areas.

Sportsmanship
On Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August several students participated in Cairns at Peninsula Trials for Athletics. All students tried their hardest and were a pleasure to take away. One student stood out on Sunday. Whilst racing in the 1500m, another student fainted during her race. Mayleen King showed great sportsmanship and helped this young lady up and walked the remainder of the race with her to the finish line. It is so lovely to hear this type of sportsmanship from our students. Well done, Mayleen.
Manners go a long way
It is so beautiful when we hear students saying thank you and please without being asked to do so. But even better when a student is constantly thanking staff. Miss Amanda Relph has been praised for her manners and tidiness. Amanda always thanks the laundry staff for cleaning her clothes without fail, every single day, Amanda always has a clean and tidy room, and she is always the first up to do her chores in her pod.
Thank you, Amanda, for being a star boarder.

Enrichment Program
This term a group of Year 8 students have been participating in the Enrichment Program. Our focus for this term has been the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how our actions impact on the amount of plastic found in the ocean.
We have also started looking at the design process used to create solutions to problems. Our first task was to create prototypes of a design and test the design to see if it met the brief. This week will be looking at how to use surplus milk to create keychains! We have also created sustainable and innovative packaging to contain ice-cream. Students are very excited to test this design next week!
The end of the term is almost here! While everyone is excited for the holidays, it’s important to remember that we still have assessment to complete this term. Most classes have started their assessment tasks so it is important that students are attending all of their classes.
We have had fun playing ultimate disk the last two weeks, one game we had over 20 students participating which was fantastic to see! The next two weeks will be Volleyball in Main Hall.

In week 10 year 11 students will complete a full day first aid course to receive their first aid and CPR certification. The course will be held on Monday 12th September. Emails have been send to students with their log on details as they need to do the online ‘homework’ prior to the day. This should take about ninety minutes in total.
Year 12 students were excited to attend the opening of the senior common room. It was a lovely event with catered lunch for students and staff. The common room is opened at break times and has a fridge, kettle and a microwave as well as comfortable seats to relax on. I have personally been extremely impressed with how clean and tidy students have been keeping the space. On Wednesday, year 12s were also gifted with a beautiful hamper from Mr Brauer filled with goodies. They were very grateful and happy to receive these gifts.
