Acting Principal
Talofa Lava and Hello,
I would like to first take this opportunity to thank CES in allowing me to be Acting Principal of this beautiful school which has a proud history. I am also thankful in working alongside a committed and dedicated staff willing to make a difference with the students in our care. Without saying too much I am a New Zealand born, Samoan background, naturalised Aussie citizen who still barracks for the NZ All Blacks Rugby Union team and will wear anything and everything that has Samoa written on it. Unfortunately I also go for the NSW Blues team…I hope I have not lost any supporters here already 😊.
My family live all around Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and even in the USA and I am just a typical Pacific Islander attracted to food..but I feel the natural surroundings here in Herberton with all the hills will allow me to lose a few kilos here and there.😊
I have worked in Education since 1994. I have worked in government schools, independent schools and now working in Catholic Education. During that time my travels in education has taken me from Logan in South Brisbane to Townsville to Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory back to Glenden, a mining town in Mackay, up to Cooktown and now here to Herberton ..this being my seventh school and my third in a Leadership role.
I am Acting Principal until the end of the year but I will also put my name in the hat to be Principal on a permanent basis. For now, I can focus on my role now which is to support my leadership team as best I can and work alongside the dedicated staff of Mount St. Bernard College to assist, mentor, guide and support the students in our care.

The assessment period is well and truly underway at MSB. Students have been working diligently to give themselves the best preparation for the assessment period. Teachers are busily marking and providing feedback to students on the outcomes of their assessment items in preparation for the Term 3 progress reports to be issued in week 10.
Parent Teacher interviews will be held Tuesday, 11 October 2022 (week 2 Term 4) from 3.00-6.00pm. A 10 minute interview with your child’s teacher is an opportunity to see what your student is learning, how they are progressing and what’s happening for them at school. You can learn so much about your child’s progress by meeting with their teacher/s for 10 minutes a semester. At MSB we understand it’s not always possible/convenient to attend in-person, phone interviews can also be arranged.
Information on how to book using Parent Teacher Online (PTO) will be sent out prior to the end of Term 3.
I wish all our staff and students a safe, fun and restful holiday.
Kieran Ryan - Deputy Principal Administration & Curriculum
Deputy Principal Residential
Dear Parents and Friends of MSB,
It has been a long and productive term for boarding students with many milestones achieved. Our senior students have shown great resilience and determination to complete their assignments and assessments. As we all know, being a boarder is very difficult due to the separation from family and loved ones, along with the distance from familiar environments. We have noticed that staying connected to culture is a key component in enabling students to cope whilst away from their country and family. Our recent NAIDOC event provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their traditions and culture with the entire College community. This event also allowed boarders to see family and be immersed in song and dance which has certainly assisted them to remain positive through to the end of the term.
The students who are able connect to their culture and family whilst at MSB, demonstrate greater resilience, self-esteem and more confidence. We have created opportunities for students to feel proud of their cultural background and encourage them use song and dance to re-connect with family. We will continue to provide opportunities for all students to celebrate their cultural identity and share their skills and talents throughout Term Four.
As we approach the school holiday period, I’d like to remind all families of the importance of routine and structure whilst your child is back at home. During the term, we have strict guidelines with regard to bedtimes and phones. We often find that students struggle to get back into routine after the school holidays due to different boundaries at home. It greatly benefits your child if their home routine is similar to the school routine. This will be of utmost importance with our senior students as Term Four will be the busiest term of their secondary education.
I hope all families and carers get a chance to re-connect and spend quality time with their children over the holiday break.
Kind regards,
Scott Whitters - Deputy Principal Residential
Assistant Principal Wellbeing
As we begin the school holidays, students are tired and looking forward to some time away from formal learning. Most look forward to time away with family, carers and loved ones. For some school holidays can be a stressful time - for families and young people. Planning is required to ensure that young people have things to do to occupy their time and keep them fit and healthy, in mind and body. Adults caring for them need to look after themselves as well.
The Parent Line offers free counselling and support for parents and carers in Qld and the NT. They have a telephone and web chat service alongside a very informative webpage designed for young people of all ages, inclusive of informative topics like ‘Dealing with Family Stress’ and ‘Teaching Kids Respect in Relationships’. Don’t be frightened to seek support if you are feeling stressed/ overwhelmed by the school holidays.
They can be contacted here.
https://parentline.com.au/ or 1300 30 1300
Another great website for both adults and young people is ‘Reachout’. https://au.reachout.com/
It includes information tailored to parents and carers as well as young people and it covers a large variety of topics and helpful information.
Whatever you do, try and enjoy time with your young person in the coming weeks.

It was an absolute joy to take fourteen of our Year 10 and 11 students to the inaugural Cairns Diocese Catholic Earth-care Youth Summit at Newman College, Smithfield.
We listened to Sabrina Stevens from Caritas Australia Catholic Earth-care, Shilo Villaflor from the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation and Claire Doherty from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition. After each presenter, we had an opportunity to ask questions and talk about what this information meant to us – either at MSB or in our home communities.
Shandrella was the motivating force behind MSB being one of the two schools who organised the event. Thank you to Griffin and Caitlyn for also being part of the organising committee. Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially Lizikerah and Rose for their beautiful singing during the liturgy! It was wonderful to have Ms Julie Oswell and Ms Andrea Bryan come and learn with us so they can help us to make changes at MSB.
We came away inspired!
“Thank you for giving us examples of what we can do and this space to learn more about our rights.”
“To implement ideas at our school and be part of the change”
“Connecting our words with some examples”
“This is giving us ideas of what we should do back at school and to let others know what we can do.”

English & Humanities
It has been an exciting term for students in Humanities, with several field trips and excursions. This will continue in Term 4 as we aim to make our curriculum as hands-on and relevant as possible. Year 7 students, who enjoyed a visit to the Ancient Rome exhibition at the Armour and Artillery museum for their History unit, will get to do something completely different and explore liveability in the local area for Geography.
Congratulations to the Year 12 English, EAL, Modern History and Geography students who have finished their Internal Assessment work for the year. Students in these challenging ATAR subjects have been working hard throughout the year to complete investigations, research reports, essays, imaginative writing and persuasive speeches. They are now focused on preparing for the external assessment examinations in Term 4. Essential English students have one more assessment to go and have also worked hard this year to develop a range of key skills in writing, speaking and analysing texts, which will be immensely useful when they leave school and enter the workplace. Year 10 students making subject selection choices are encouraged to talk to teachers and other students about the different English and Humanities options so that they start their senior years with confidence doing subjects in which they have an interest and can excel.

Senior Studies, Mathematics & Science
Year 12 Prepares for their Final Assessments
Term 4 is only 3 weeks long for some of our year 12 students. For others it will stretch out to 6 weeks. Those students who are studying General Subjects will have one or two exams per subject worth 25 % for each exam. The exam timetable along with times for additional revision can be found on the parent portal. Parents are asked to encourage all students to attend these study sessions, so the best outcomes are achieved. Some students may choose to begin their studies over the forthcoming September holiday period.
Students need to be prepared for the fact that there will be an observer from QCAA at most exams who will be present to ensure that all procedures are correctly followed. They will also be placed in Mercy Hall in a straight line, one behind each other, and have all equipment supplied by the school.
It can be a very stressful time for students who are reminded that they should approach the well-being team if required.
Maths and Science News
Many topics have been covered in junior Maths and Science this term. Below are some of the many photos taken of the laboratory experiments undertaken by our classes. As the pictures demonstrate our students always love hands on learning which is why we do so much of it at our college. It also puts them in good stead if they wish to study chemistry, biology or physics in years 11 and 12.

Swimming Carnival
Last Tuesday we held our annual Swimming Carnival at the Atherton Pool. Our students eagerly arrived at the pool ready to swim and support their teammates. The day started off a little overcast and students enjoyed hot tea & milo. In the afternoon the sun started shining and we all warmed up to enjoy some free time in the pool and fun novelty events. At the end of the day the staff took the win over the students in relays, despite some questionable tactics used by some student teams! Age Champions are to be congratulated on their outstanding efforts. Special thanks to everyone who helped organise the day.

Our students were lucky to be selected for a residency program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander senior secondary students that was held across two full days in Cairns and surrounding sites. There was a number of regional and remote schools already, including Western Cape Bamaga and Northern Peninsula Weipa. During the program, students worked alongside established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creative practitioners in team-based projects and cultural learning. Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Learning staff and Department of Education educators will also support program facilitation and supervision. Tamika Neade, “it was really inspiring”, Tayiesha “it was so much fun!” Tae “it was good, the food was very good”.

Energy 2022
Mount St Bernard’s very own Tamika, Tayiesha, Sinevah and Mahalia exhibited their artwork at the Tanks Energy Art exhibition. This was an incredible opportunity for Visual Arts students in years 10-12 to take pride in their work being professionally curated by a team of curators. This was a chance for students to reach an audience of over 10, 000 people across Festival Cairns and to be eligible for a wide range of awards presented by key arts industry leaders in Cairns.
Tayiesha Warria received a PAEA award that was presented by Art Teacher’s Leanne Shead (St Monicas) and Nicole Boreham (Smithfield High). It was a fabulous night, celebrated with friends and family.

Artist in Residence
In the lead up to NAIDOC Day, Mount St Bernard’s was honoured to have Tanya Price visiting as an Artist in Residence. She is a famous Indigenous Artist from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Students were fascinated watching Tanya paint. She also worked with Senior students to paint some round boards for Girls Boarding and a large-scale NAIDOC painting. In this painting, Tae Dempsey helped Tanya paint bush tomatoes, bush potatoes, bush lemons and bush bananas. On the top of the board, Torres Strait students incorporated patterns that are demonstrated in lino-prints. It was a lovely collaboration of cultures. Tanya also inspired the junior classes. They loved painting, learning and talking about culture. Thank you, Tanya.

Industrial Technology and Design
In Year 7, Industrial Technology and Design students have been working on wooden turtles. They have created some real works of art! Students had to mark, saw, chisel out and glue their turtle frames together with precision. They then used a coping saw to cut out the shape of their turtle shell and burned on a design that they created. We have some very creative students. We have had a great term and every student has learnt how to use a range of tools. Even students that had low confidence at the start of term have worked and worked and really built that confidence with the tools. Great work Year 7, you have shown that no matter how difficult something seems at the start, with hard work and commitment, anything is possible.

Senior Years 10 -12
On Monday, Year 11 students acquired the skills and knowledge to provide first aid in a range of situations through completing a full day first aid and CPR course. First aid training focuses on providing immediate care to sick or injured patients until full medical help is available. First Aid knowledge is invaluable as it enables you to assist persons who become injured in the event of an accident or emergency situation until help arrives. First Aid skills can be applied in the home, the workplace or in public locations, therefore the more First Aid certified people there are in a community the safer that community becomes. The first aid certificate is current for 3 years, while the CPR needs to be refreshed every 12 months.

Year 7s have made good progress in their Digital Technologies; solving a range of computational thinking problems and learning how loops and selection constructs can make more efficient algorithms.
Year 8 Digi Tech students are finalising their 3D Monster models and creating stories about their monsters in prep for pitching to Pixar Studios.
Year 10 Digi Tech students have been busy creating “How To” videos, learning the importance of storyboarding, planning and considering privacy and legalities when sharing publications on social media.
Senior news:
Senior ICT Applied students have been busy creating and testing their apps, and the Digital Solutions students have begun revising for the final year exam.
Business students have been creating business plans for their own business ideas.

ATHA held their inaugural Indigenous round in 2022 and received permission to run a competition amongst the MSB students to design the Indigenous artwork for it.
As we all know, we have many talented artists at MSB. It was too hard to pick just one winner so two winners were chosen. Naomi Tomsana-Sam & Atayah Bulmer from our Year 7 cohort are the winners. Their designs are pictured below. Their designs were printed on water bottles and given to each club member as a memento of the day. The girls received a water bottle and $50.
