Principal
2023 Welcome
2023 has been filled with new beginnings. As a new Principal in the College, there are many firsts and many people speak about the impact of first impressions. Mount St Bernard College, staff, students, families and the community have made an incredible first impression. I have been so taken back by the warm welcome that I have received. I’ve also been struck by the inclusive and supportive way staff, students and our families accept each other. It is reaffirming to see students who were looking a little shy and nervous on their first day, smiling and laughing with their new group of friends by morning tea and their willingness to chat with their peers and staff.

Welcome the following new staff
The school holidays were a great time to re-energise and prepare ourselves for the new school year. I have wonderful stories about what the students have done with families and friends over Christmas and that one thing I’ve noticed is the great respect our students have for their families and carers. My hope is that our Boarding and Day school will feel like MSB is a home away from home. This will give us the opportunity to work in partnership with you to nurture our students and help them develop resilience, dream and strive for goals, strengthen their learning and get the most out of school.
There was a lot of excitement on Tuesday when the students were back in their uniforms and meeting at the Main Hall to collect their stationery packs and for the Year 7 students who met in Mercy Hall for the first time. I was instantly struck by how friendly and polite our students were and I enjoyed watching their genuine excitement as they caught up with old and new friends. I’d like to thank Desley Mosquito for Welcoming the Year 7s, our new students and families to the Jirrbal land and to Kieren Waugh, Andrea Gower and their incredible teachers that worked alongside them, for the incredible transition program she put together to help the new students feel respected and safe at MSB.
First Day of Term 1 2023
We were also fortunate to have the Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee spend a few days at school, meeting with the Leadership Team, various Middle Leaders and staff to assist us with our future planning. We were also privileged to join the TSI students in an evening prayer service. We look forward to the community re-joining us in term 2.
The Boarding Team have also been very busy and had a successful day out with all the boarding students on Australia Day. The students woke early to catch the buses down to Smithfield for a movie session and lunch out. The smiles on the students faces as they told me about the movie and the fun they had with friends spoke volumes and I’d like to thank the Boarding team for arranging this outing so early in the school year.
In 2023 we have a focus on student wellbeing and learning and this year we have a particular focus on implementing the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), with Nikki Symons, the Acting Assistant Principal Wellbeing, leading the implementation of this. MTSS is a framework to support and improve student engagement.
We concluded the first week with our Opening Mass. This was a wonderful celebration, officiated by Fr Mathew. I’d like to thank Father Mathew for coming to the College straight after his weekly Mass in Atherton, we appreciate him making the time to lead the service for us. The Gospel reading brought me so much hope for our students. Just as the mustard seeds showed the potential of small things growing into something big, our students are our mustard seeds and throughout the years they are here, we will nurture them to grow their potential. I encourage every student to take every opportunity available to them with both hands and become the person you want to be in this world.
I heard a story once of a young boy on the beach. He saw the shore filled with starfish. As he walked forward, he would pick one up and throw it back into the ocean. A fishman stopped him and said, “Don’t bother, you can’t save them all”, the boy simply smiled and said, “But I made a difference to that one.” Everything we do has a ripple effect, and we never truly know the impact we are making on others. I encourage our students to continue this year as they have started. I have seen the friendliest students, who go out of their way to include others and make them welcome. They fill me with so much hope and I look forward to seeing what our students all achieve this year.
The Opening Mass was also a time to present our Student Leaders with their College Leadership Badges:
College Captains Mercy Captains
Sinevah Mari Lauren Cairns
Griffin Johns Yasserie Kyle-Smith
We also welcomed our new staff to the College and presented them with their College candle so they can also “Let their light shine.”
Opening Mass 2023
Mastering Learning
The core task a student has is to learn. This means they need to take ownership and responsibility for how they apply themselves both in and out of the classroom. Throughout lessons teachers lead a range of activities to help students develop and strengthen their learning potential and assist them to work towards their pathway goals. Students then need to apply learnt techniques when they complete homework assignments, study and exam preparation. Students are also encouraged to read each day.
Study Habits for our ATAR Students
No one is born knowing how to study. It takes time to understand how you learn and knowing how you learn can improve your study habits. When developing your study potential, it is important to study smarter and this will make preparation for assessment tasks, tests and exams more manageable. To begin, you need to learn how to create a study plan. When developing a study plan, keep it:
- Simple. A good plan is uncomplicated.
- Specific. A good plan states what you're going to do and where, when, and how you're going to do it.
- Positive. A good plan states what you're going to do (not what you're going to stop doing).
- Repetitive. A good plan includes something you can repeat frequently.
- Independent. A good plan is based on you doing the work; it doesn't depend on somebody else.
- Immediate. A good plan can be started soon, usually within twenty-four hours.
- Committed. A good plan includes I will statements.
All students at MSB will receive a Student Planner to record homework and due dates for assessment. There is also space to keep track of school events and activities. The purpose of the planner is to help students to organise their homework, assignments, study and to plan ahead.
I wish everyone all the best for the 2023 school year and I look forward to getting to know the MSB community throughout this year.
Narelle Hunt - Principal
Deputy Principal Curriculum & Admin
2023 has already proven to be a year of success.
During our staff week, teachers spent 3 days engaged in professional development, engaging in days focused on ‘Teaching in a Catholic School’, ‘Supporting Multi-lingual students’, and ‘Differentiation’. The remainder of the week was then spent planning engaging and exciting learning activities for the term. We have also welcomed some fantastic new staff to the MSB team. These new teachers and support staff have travelled from far and wide, as well as some local, which shows the great reputation MSB is building for being a holistic leaning environment.
It was wonderful to see so many returning students for the start to the year, MSB’s wonderful atmosphere is created by our students and seeing the grounds full of happy, smiley faces as students reconnected with friends and family was great to see.
Our new Year 7 students showed their resilience and leapt into their orientation with enthusiasm. The cohort were quick to show they were keen to get to class and are settling in well. During their first week, they spent time getting to know the College, each other, and their teachers.
Progressive Achievement Tests (or PATs as they are commonly referred to) are currently being undertaken in Maths & Reading for all new students in Years 7 to 10, and those who did not undertake PATs in 2021. The PATs are designed to help determine the level of achievement for students in Maths and Reading comprehension and assists our college in providing targeted learning for students.
There has also been a change in the timings of NAPLAN this year. Years 7 and 9 will sit their NAPLAN tests in Term 1, beginning on Wednesday 15th March. This is fantastic news as it means teachers can access the data sooner in the year and begin to adapt their teaching to our student’s needs. Please keep an eye out for more correspondence regarding NAPLAN in the coming weeks.
The College continues to develop the blended learning model and integration of ICT in our classrooms. Our teachers are continually improving their skills in the use of online tools to provide students with engaging content. We will also continue to implement the work of Lynn Sharratt from her book ‘Clarity – What Matters Most in Learning, Teaching and Leading’. A fundamental part of this work is the 5 questions for students, parents, and teachers. We encourage parents to ask their students:
- What did you learn today?
- How did you do?
- What did you do if you didn’t understand?
- How can you improve on your learning?
- What are you most proud of?
As our students settle back into school and reacquaint themselves with the school routines and expectations, a consistent focus has been placed around displaying the MSB Three. Students are encouraged to take ownership over their learning by setting goals, developing strategies to improve their outcomes, asking questions, and reflecting on not only their progress but their behaviour.
We look forward to the many exciting challenges Term 1 may bring.

Dear Families and Friends of MSB
Welcome to start of the 2023 school year. We are extremely pleased to see most of our students return on time. These students have settled back into routines very quickly and have been abiding by boarding house expectations. Any students who have not yet returned should be staying in touch with their teachers to ensure continuity of the learning program. Please contact Sonya Frost or Andrea Gower if you require assistance to transition back to school this term.
I have attached a copy of the Boarder Agreement and Mobile Phone Policy for all parents and guardians to read. All students will sign these agreements and make a commitment to abide by the expectations. Please read this document and support your child to adhere to this agreement. The expectations are based on our College Positive Behaviour Plan which focuses on being Safe, Respectful and Responsible.
I would like to remind our families that Transition House is now available for families requiring a support visit. Support visits are arranged through Abstudy to assist our people to engage with learning and remain at school. Having the support from family on site is a great way for young people to settle in and build confidence to be away from home.
One of the major challenges for residential staff is ensuring all students abide by the College Mobile Phone Policy. As you all know, students are only permitted to have one phone at school. If you are aware your student has a second or dummy phone, please ask them to hand it in and follow the correct procedures. Students who are unable to abide by the phone policy will lose their responsibility to have a phone and have their phone confiscated.
Finally, please assist and support your child to wear the correct uniform throughout the year and ensure they abide by the College Uniform Policy, including the wearing of jewellery. Our Uniform Policy is available on the College website for all to see.
We once again have a highly professional and committed staff cohort to care for all young people in boarding. Judy Anning and Dave Shade are the Assistant Heads of Boarding who do a wonderful job of overseeing all boarding related matters. I look forward to walking alongside our young people as they develop and grow into young adults.
Kind regards,
Scott Whitters
Assistant Principal Mission
Commencement Mass
On Friday 27 January, we celebrated the Opening of the College year with a mass in Mercy Chapel led by Rev Fr Mathew Kochuveettil. It was a wonderful liturgy with the whole college participating reverently. Our College Captains: Sinevah Mari and Griffin Johns and Mercy Captains: Lauren Cairns and Yasserie Kyle-Smith pledged their commitment to their roles. We were delighted to have their families attend this significant moment for their children. All new staff were given an MSB candle and welcomed to the MSB family. Special guests included Ian Davis, Deputy Director and Adrien Innes-Simpson of Cairns Catholic Education Services, Shane Knuth - MP & Tim Jackson - MSB Board member. Everyone enjoyed a delicious shared morning tea after Mass. Thank you to all staff and students for making this a very special and spirited start to 2023.
Opening Mass
Religion
At the beginning of each year, we revisit the history and Mercy charism of MSB. The Sisters of Mercy started our college over 100 years ago! All members of the College community – students, staff, parents and friends – are called to live out the values of Mercy, Community, Respect, Excellence and Wisdom.
Much of our Religion learning this term centres on the liturgical season of Lent and the practices we try to follow during this time – Praying, Giving and Fasting. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 22 February. Each Lent, MSB raises money to support Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. Year 11 are learning about Social Justice and they will be the driving force behind our fundraising efforts this year. Keep an eye out for activities you can support!

We have had a great start to Term 1 with the return of the majority of our students who are settling back into school routines. The students and staff are all very excited to be back with lots of great learning opportunities happening across the school. We've had a few changes to our Wellbeing team for 2023. I will be Acting Assistant Principal Wellbeing for Semester 1, which I am extremely excited and grateful for. We also have Aila Burton our new RTR coordinator as well as a new school counsellor who will be starting with us soon. Michelle Davies – Griffiths returns as our Wellbeing officer, Andrea Gower as our Transition support officer, Kenny O'Brien as our Indigenous Liaison Officer, Tanya Davis as our school nurse and Leisha Tibbs Health Centre Administration.
Each week we will be introducing a new Positive Behaviour Support Lesson (PBS). This week is all about 'How to be at MSB'. Students will be learning about MSBs rules, expectations and their job at school.

Australia Day Award
Australia Day Junior Cultural Award Winners
Congratulations to staff member, Sarah Riber and MSB students - Clementine Barker, Jack Jones, Nathan Wagner, Meena Riber, Lacey Wyatt, Yindali & Jarlun Sharp, Charlotte Price and past student Emmy Riber on winning the Tablelands Regional Council Junior Cultural Australia Day Award. The Atherton Performing Arts Youth Theatre group under the direction of Sarah Riber has demonstrated noteworthy contributions to the community through the Arts and Culture. The young people in this group have been recognised within their schools and wider community for their outstanding commitment and performances. In 2022 the youth theatre met regularly once a week in the lead up to a performance. The students had extra rehearsals to ensure they remembered their lines, and that staging and lighting ran smoothly. Their first show William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was staged for four sessions between 18th and 25th May. Opening Night was booked out. They also performed “Lord of the Flies” for four sessions between 10th – 17th September. Both shows were well supported by the community. Youth Theatre took two plays to the Far North Queensland 1 Act Play Festival in Cairns (30th Sep – 2nd Oct). This performance was highly commended by the adjudicator. The group then performed these plays in conjunction with Mount St Bernard College. Subsequently they performed at an evening of Ten-Minute Plays on Saturday 12th November at the APA Theatre. They have had a very full and prosperous year!
MSB Health Centre

Residential News
Welcome to the start of 2023 in Boarding
Our first Public Holiday happened in the first week with Australia Day.
All students and staff were treated to the Smithfield cinemas to see ‘Lyle Lyle Crocodile’ with a box of popcorn and a drink. Students were up bright and early to head down the hill. On return they each got a voucher to spend at Maccas. The day was enjoyed by all.
The start of each term we invite our Torres Strait Island Consultative Committee to the College as a way to build relationships and to learn from one another.
This term we had 6 of our committee members give up their time to spend with us at the College. Staff learnt some important communication barriers and ways around these as well as getting to know the TSI culture.
They shared their views and recommendations for our 2023 NAIDOC day event where things may look a little different this year which we are excited for. Watch this space.
We always look forward to hosting our committee members at MSB where we both learn from each other each time.

English & Humanities
After a few years impacted by Covid, it has been a positive start to 2023 so far, with most students back in school and enjoying their English and Humanities courses so far. We welcome some new teachers into the faculty, including Tobias Moldenhauer, Janelle Clarke and Kerry Winslet, while others take on new classes and roles.
The new Australian Curriculum syllabus v.9 is now being used for our Year 7 and 8 classes, and we will continue to roll it out into Years 9 and 10 next year. The English and Humanities teachers have worked together to redesign our work program to meet the new syllabus requirements and are excited to be teaching a great combination of new material and revamped older units that we know from experience our students love.
In Year 7 and 8 we will be integrating Civics and Citizenship units into our English curriculum. This will give students the opportunity to use English skills such as persuasive writing while learning about the systems and principles on which our country operates.
NAPLAN tests for Year 7 and 9 have been moved to Term 1 this year, and we have altered our English unit planning a little to accommodate this. While we do not explicitly teach to the test, we plan Term 1 units that will give our students the skills they need to understand, tackle and excel in the NAPLAN literacy tests. Teachers will also be giving students practice tests, particularly through the Education Perfect platform, so that they feel prepared and confident for NAPLAN.
It has been wonderful to have several new students join us in Year 11 and as a result, our senior English, History and Geography classes are a great size. We continue to offer small classes but have enough students for lively discussion and group work.
Sarah Riber - English and Humanities Middle Leader
Diversity
Literacy and Numeracy Intervention
At MSB we are passionate about improving outcomes for Diverse Learners including those who struggle with literacy and numeracy. This may be due to factors such as disability, interrupted schooling, or a language barrier.
In 2022 we introduced our literacy and numeracy intervention program. It was a huge success with all students achieving measurable growth. This year we will continue to offer MacqLit and Corrective Maths for students in Years 7 and 8. These direct instruction programs are designed to accelerate the learning of at-risk students.
MacqLit is an evidence-based reading program developed by Macquarie University for students who need help with their reading. It helps to improve reading and spelling accuracy, reading fluency and reading comprehension. MacqLit has been shown to be highly effective in supporting older low-progress readers. Statistics show that on average, students achieve two years of reading growth in just one semester of attending MacqLit.
Corrective Maths is for older students who struggle with math facts, computation, and strategies for problem solving. Upon completion of one or more of the modules, students will be armed with the basic strategies they need to access conventional math instruction with success.
We are currently in the process of screening students for the Intervention Program. Eligible students will work in small groups with a trained Learning Support officer three lessons per week. If your child is selected to participate, you will be notified via parent slips. Please talk with your student about the value of intervention and encourage them to make the most of this opportunity. For any questions relating to diversity and intervention, please email lwhiting1@cns.catholic.edu.au or telephone the school office.

Business & Technologies
We are excited that 2023 sees the return of all our Junior Year 7-8 rotation subjects, allowing students to have a taster of a range of specialisms within technologies and business.
The Design Technologies have now combined with Digital Technologies and Business to make one faculty.
Year 7 students have started their technologies and business classes this week, and I look forward to sharing snippets about their progress and learning in the next newsletter.
Welcome back to our year 8-12 students! We hope you enjoy what we have lined up for you this term.

Welcome to MSB HPE & Sport for 2023!
The year has started at full pace with Volleyball, the first of the district trials being held this week at Malanda SHS. Following on with Netball, Rugby League and Basketball next week.
The district calendar is published on the sport noticeboard (under the dining hall) for students to access. This calendar is also attached to this newsletter and has been sent home through parent slips. I encourage parents/ guardians to highlight and write down the sports your student is interested in alongside when the paperwork is due to ensure you do not miss out.
Students must then register their interest or put their name on the sign-up sheets on the sports noticeboard.
Term 1 will also include our whole school cross country and swimming carnivals in week 8 and 10 respectively. These are a fantastic way to get involved in school spirit and participate with mates, or for the more competitive, maybe break some records!
In our HPE lessons, years 7-9 have started the year learning about positive relationships, a note has been sent home regarding the topics being covered. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or your student’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Looking forward to a super year!
Andrea Goetze - HPE & Sport Middle Leader

Junior Years
Year 7 Orientation
This year we were lucky enough to have almost our entire cohort of Year 7 students onsite for the first week of school. We had a range of activities throughout the week which were designed to bring the students together as a cohort.
We started our week being welcomed and warmed to country by Jirrbal Traditional Owner, Desley Mosquito. Throughout the week we worked in groups to brainstorm ‘How to be at MSB’ and got to experience being present in our beautiful chapel. We learnt about each other’s communities and pledged to walk alongside each other throughout our schooling journey by adding a footprint to our Year 7 banner.
- Find a Friend Bingo
- Sport activities
- Minute to win in challenges in our house groups
- A scavenger hunt around the school with senior students
- Created a parachute for an egg
We finished the week with a quiet reflection on what we enjoyed about the week and students wrote down a wish for their schooling years at MSB.
We had a wonderful start to the year!
