As the school year comes to a close, we take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the Victorian and Queensland Emergency Services Fire Services for their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts to keep our community and College safe from bushfires.
The past year presented unprecedented challenges, and the threat of bushfires loomed large over Herberton and its surrounding areas. In times of crisis, it is the resilience of communities and the selfless acts of individuals that truly shine. We are fortunate to have witnessed the incredible dedication of the emergency services personnel who travelled from Victoria and Queensland to stand by our side and keep our College and community safe.
The collaborative efforts of the Victorian and Queensland Emergency Services Fire Services exemplify the strength that emerges when communities come together to face adversity. Their presence not only provided a sense of security but also instilled a spirit of unity among us all. To the Victorian and Queensland Emergency Services Fire Services, we extend our heartfelt thanks for being the guardians of our safety. Your dedication has left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we are truly grateful for the protection you provided to our beloved Herberton and its surrounding areas.

Welcoming the 2024 Year 7s
The grounds of Mount St Bernard College buzzed with excitement as we warmly welcomed the incoming Year 7 students for the 2024 academic year. The Year 6-7 Transition Program was in full swing, designed by Andrea Gower and Kieren Waugh, to ease the transition from primary to secondary education and create a sense of community and familiarity for our newest members.
For our boarding students, the journey began with a Boarding Readiness Program. This initiative not only addressed the practical aspects of boarding life but also focused on building connections and creating a supportive environment. As part of this program, students embarked on a captivating exploration of the Tablelands, immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the region's waterfalls. The experience served as an opportunity for bonding and fostering a sense of camaraderie among the boarding cohort.
The entire Year 7 cohort, both day students and boarders, later converged to get to know each other and familiarise themselves with the College's facilities. This collective gathering set the stage for the creation of lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging within the Mount St Bernard community.
The highlight of this introduction to secondary school life was the entertaining performance of "Count Spatula" by the talented Year 10 Drama classes. Laughter and applause filled Mercy Hall as the students showcased their creativity and thespian skills, providing an engaging and memorable experience for the incoming Year 7 students.
As we witness the enthusiasm and energy of our incoming Year 7 students, we are confident that they will seamlessly integrate into the Mount St Bernard College community. The friendships forged during this transition period will undoubtedly contribute to a supportive and vibrant atmosphere throughout their secondary school journey. We extend our warmest welcome to the Year 7 students of 2024 and look forward to the incredible contributions and achievements that lie ahead for each of them.

Mercy Reflection
As the holiday season approaches, we often find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of festivities. In the midst of the celebrations, it is essential to reflect on the true spirit of Christmas – a season of love, compassion, and generosity. Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, left behind a legacy of profound wisdom and compassion. Her words continue to resonate, offering guidance and inspiration during this special time of year.
- Embracing the Spirit of Giving:
Catherine McAuley believed in the transformative power of giving, emphasising that the true joy of Christmas lies in selfless acts of kindness. As we exchange gifts and celebrate with loved ones, McAuley's teachings remind us to extend our generosity beyond material presents. Whether it's offering a helping hand to those in need or dedicating time to volunteer, Christmas becomes truly meaningful when we embody the spirit of giving.
- Cultivating Compassion:
In her teachings, Catherine McAuley stressed the importance of compassion as a guiding force in our lives. Christmas serves as a poignant reminder to cultivate empathy and understanding for others, especially those facing challenges and hardships. McAuley's words encourage us to open our hearts to those less fortunate, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity within our communities.
- Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures:
Amidst the elaborate decorations and festive gatherings, Catherine McAuley encourages us to find joy in life's simple pleasures. Christmas is not solely about grand gestures; it is about cherishing the warmth of relationships, embracing moments of laughter, and appreciating the beauty of simplicity. McAuley's wisdom invites us to savour the small, yet precious, moments that make this season truly magical.
- Reflecting on the True Meaning:
In the midst of the commercialisation of Christmas, Catherine McAuley's words prompt us to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday. Beyond the glittering lights and elaborate feasts, Christmas symbolizes the birth of hope, love, and renewal. McAuley's teachings guide us to focus on the spiritual essence of the season, fostering a deeper connection with our faith and a renewed sense of purpose.
Catherine McAuley's words of wisdom continue to echo through time, offering a timeless guide for navigating the Christmas season with compassion and purpose. As we celebrate this joyous occasion, let us heed her teachings, embracing the spirit of giving, cultivating compassion, finding joy in simplicity, and reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas. In doing so, we can create a holiday season filled with love, warmth, and the true spirit of Catherine McAuley's enduring legacy.
Season Greetings
As the holiday season approaches, we want to take a moment to extend our warmest wishes to all students, parents, teachers, staff, and everyone who contributes to making our school a vibrant and enriching environment. May this holiday season bring joy, relaxation, and quality time spent with loved ones.
The holiday break is not only a time to unwind and recharge but also an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past year. Together, we have accomplished so much, and we look forward to building on these successes in the upcoming year. Your dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm continue to inspire us, and we are excited about the possibilities that the future holds for our school community.
During this holiday season, we encourage everyone to prioritise self-care and spend quality time with family and friends. Whether you are traveling to new destinations or enjoying the comforts of home, we hope you find peace, happiness, and a well-deserved break.
Our school will be closed for the holiday break from 1 December 2023 to 15 January, 2024, and we look forward to reuniting with all of you when classes resume on 24 January, 2024. Until then, we wish you a safe and joyful holiday season. May the spirit of the holidays fill your homes with warmth and laughter.
Wishing you all a safe, happy, and restful holiday season!

What a busy and delightful end to the school year!
The Year 11 Leadership Retreat at Genazzano on the banks of Lake Tinaroo was a welcome opportunity for staff and students to get to know each other better and connect with their God in beautiful natural surroundings.
“This was an amazing experience for all of us as it was a time to disconnect, relax, and recharge ourselves before our exams. During the retreat, several fun games were played letting us bond with people we may not have known very well beforehand. The students particularly enjoyed the water fights they held each day, where they displayed their competitive spirit and athletic abilities. As a result of the retreat, we were able to enhance our leadership skills and strengthen our work attitudes.” Ebony
With pride, and a few tears, we said goodbye to our Year 12s at their Graduation Liturgy. It was wonderful to have so many family members present as we prayed for these young adults as well as the staff, families and communities who have guided them during their years at MSB.
Class of 2023, you left us with an MSB candle,
a symbol of the Spirit within you and the light you take out to the world.
May the flame of your spirit always burn brightly.
May you be a light within your community.
May God’s mercy shine upon you!
Thank you to the Year 11 students who let their light shine by preparing and leading the end of year liturgy. From creating the Advent wreath and preparing the chapel, to organising the flags, lighting the candles, reading the prayers, controlling the PowerPoint and singing with spirit – you all did a great job and proved what capable leaders you will be in 2024!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As Term 4 draws to a close, we are delighted to share an update with you. We extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, which, combined with the dedication of our college's staff, has ensured a successful term for our students. Your partnership has been instrumental in fostering a positive school experience for each child.
Throughout the term, our well-being team remained steadfast in their commitment to supporting your child's holistic development. Tailored programs like "Seasons for Growth," "Yarning with Jamin," "Good Blokes," and "Assert Yourself" were used to address various facets of your child's growth. Moreover, we provided enriching after-school activities such as ukulele group sessions, adventurous bushwalks, lively karaoke sessions, engaging cooking classes, and stimulating art and craft activities. Our community day at Sugarworld in week 8 was a highlight promoting a sense of togetherness and joy.
This term, we explored crucial topics including self-regulation techniques for stress management, navigating peer pressure responsibly, ensuring online safety, and looked at anti-vaping initiatives. Your continued partnership in nurturing our children, guiding them towards making safe, respectful, and informed choices, celebrating their accomplishments, and fostering a robust, supportive community is immensely cherished and deeply valued.
As we approach the holiday season, I wish you and your family a blessed, joyful and safe Christmas break. We eagerly anticipate continuing this educational journey with your child in the upcoming year.

Library
Rounding off the year, with some well-deserved compliments and gratitude, the Library hosted the MSB kindness, compliments, and gratitude wall. Here staff and students shared their appreciation for each other. It was a huge hit giving the students an opportunity to say thanks to their teachers or learning support officers and it definitely filled the metaphorical cup for all, as reading all the wonderful sentiments created some endorphin filled feel good moments. Staff also contributed to the wall with shout outs to the hardworking laundry team, the wonderful Kitchen, and the administration teams too! Some of my favourites were simple recognitions of friendship, or hard work and dedication to the teaching and learning as well as the wellbeing of all the members of the MSB community. This began as a small token of gratitude and grew into something beautiful and representative of everything good here at Mount St Bernard College.
The library has also been supporting students in boarding through the Renaissance Reading program by matching students with their levelled books from the collection for students to read and complete related tasks and quizzes. This program aims to develop comprehension skills and engage students in reading after school. A huge thankyou should go to Kim Van Kempen and Malcolm Fahey for their hard work in getting this program off the ground. I am looking forward to 2024 when we will see the program extended into all students.
Collecting library resources at the end of the year is the busiest and trickiest time, however I would like to take this time to thank the staff and students who have borrowed and returned their library books. If parents or students find library books at home over the break, please pack them in your young persons bag so they can return them day 1 2024!
A reminder to all students and caregivers, that all students can log in to Sora the audio book and ebook platform for free! Go to soraapp.com and search ACEN as your school. Select ACEN (Australian Catholic Education Network) and follow the prompts to use your school login. You can download the app onto your personal device and listen to audio books on car trips, or while relaxing by the lake or beach. Enjoy!
I look forward to supporting the teaching and learning and the reading for pleasure in 2024. Remember: Reading is Rad!

English & Humanities
Congratulations to all students for the work they have put into the last few weeks of term. Teachers have been impressed with the quality of work that everyone has maintained even as we all start to feel tired at the end of the year. Year 10 students have completed a challenging case study on human wellbeing for their Geography assessment, as well as presentations and graphic novels in English, which will ensure they are prepared for the rigours of Year 11 study across many subject areas next year. Year 9 students entertained their classmates and teachers with slam poems while Year 8 included impressive analytical depth in their advertising essays. On top of this, Years 7-10 have also produced some excellent short stories in the Unaided Writing task, which we run twice a year to assess writing development across the school. Congratulations to students and teachers for their work this year and the wonderful creative responses they have produced across so many different units.

Acting Maths & Science
As we draw near to the conclusion of Term 4, we're excited to share the incredible achievements and explorations from our Mathematics, Science, and Agriculture departments.
Mathematics Department: In Mathematics, our Year 10 students have had an exceptional term. They've had the unique opportunity to trial senior classes, ensuring they're fully prepared and confident in their choices for the upcoming years. This hands-on experience has empowered them to make informed decisions as they progress in their academic journey. Year 8 and 9 had the opportunity to engage in real world applications by collecting data from locals and tourists in Cairns. This invaluable experience not only bolstered their mathematical skills in data collection and analysis but also instilled a sense of connection between mathematical concepts and their practical applications in understanding societal trends and patterns. The data they've gathered will serve as a foundation for intriguing analytical projects, fostering a deeper understanding of mathematical principles and their relevance in our dynamic world.
Science Department: Our Year 9 cohort has delved deeply into the fascinating realms of plate tectonics, continental drift theory, and the formation and impact of natural phenomena such as volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Their exploration has been both enlightening and awe-inspiring, fostering a profound understanding of the Earth's dynamic processes. They had to examine maps and diagrams, draw a diagram, and provide short response answers - skills we have been practicing all term.
Simultaneously, our Year 10 students have been captivated by the study of the diversity of life throughout the ages. This captivating subject has opened their minds to the rich tapestry of biological evolution and biodiversity.
Agriculture Department: Our Agriculture department continues to inspire curiosity and passion for the environment and sustainable practices. Our passionate Agriculture students recently embarked on an enriching field trip to Mungali Dairy, an acclaimed local dairy farm. This excursion was an immersive experience, providing our students with hands-on exposure to sustainable farming practices and the complexities of modern dairy operations. From witnessing the intricate processes of milking and production to understanding the innovative techniques employed for sustainable agriculture, the trip to Mungali Dairy offered invaluable insights. Engaging with industry experts and observing the farm's commitment to environmental stewardship has ignited a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness between agriculture, technology, and conservation among our aspiring agriculturists. This excursion has undoubtedly broadened their perspectives and inspired them to continue their journey toward responsible and innovative agricultural practices.
Senior Achievements: Additionally, our Year 12 students have successfully completed their external exams, marking the end of an era and clearing the path for our new cohort of senior students. Their hard work and dedication have been commendable, and we wish them the very best for their future endeavors.
As we approach the end of Term 4, we express our gratitude to the students, parents, and faculty for their unwavering support and commitment. We're excited to see what the upcoming year holds for our students and the continued success they achieve.
Nikki Chamber - Acting Maths & Science Middle Leader
Individual teacher messages:
Miss Olivia Brewster to 9B: Ms Olivia wishes 9B all the best as they transition into the Senior School next year.
Miss Olivia Brewster to 10B: For some in 10B, this is the last time they will formally study Science (if they didn't choose a Science in year 11). 10B have grown in maturity and wisdom throughout 2023, and it has been Ms Olivia's pleasure to be on the learning journey with them. She would like to take this opportunity to wish 10B well for their Year 11 studies and futures beyond.
Diversity
During term 4, our focus in Macqlit was to 'be the three':
- Be on time
- Be respectful and,
- Be engaged
During periods 3 and 4 on Wednesday 15th November, students who had consistently demonstrated the three were rewarded! They were invited to participate in a movie and popcorn afternoon, and were also presented with a $10 McDonalds voucher. The students involved were very excited and had a great time. Have a great holiday and see you back in 2024!

Farewell to our 2023 Year 12s
As the Senior School Coordinator, I reflect on the culmination of this year with immense pride and gratitude. The graduating class of 2023 has demonstrated a remarkable spirit of unity that undoubtedly has defined our school community.
This year has presented unique challenges, and yet, our seniors faced them with admirable grace. The collective spirit of resilience displayed by the graduating class has not only been a source of inspiration for their fellow students but has also left an enduring legacy for the school community.
As we bid farewell to these accomplished individuals, we celebrate not only their personal and collective achievements but also the growth, camaraderie, and lasting contributions they've made to our school. We eagerly anticipate the continued success and bright futures that await each graduate, knowing they carry with them the values and experiences gained during their time in our Senior School.
2024 Senior Shirt
Thank you to Mahalia Jones and her team of trusted supporters who have worked tirelessly to materialise their design. The design for next year's senior shirt encapsulates the essence of unity, resilience, and the unique spirit of our graduating class. The 2024 Senior Shirt is a blend of vibrant colours that have been carefully chosen to symbolise the diversity within our senior community, the art work reflects the strength forged through shared experiences, carefully crafted by the students, and encapsulates the collective journey and aspirations of the class. This shirt serves not only as a symbol of camaraderie but as a tangible reminder of the bonds formed and the challenges overcome. It's a wearable testament to the indomitable spirit that defines each member of the graduating class. If you would like your own 2024 SENIOR SHIRT, contact Julie at Student Reception at your earliest convenience.

Junior Years 7 - 9
As we approach the end of the school year, I'm excited to look back on the fantastic achievements and development of students in Years 7, 8, and 9. In addition to students’ dedication in their core and elective subjects, it was great to see the culmination of the efforts of Years 7 and 8 in their group projects where they tackled real-world problems. It was amazing to see their creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork in action. The recent exhibition, where students presented their ideas for resolving an issue in their world to their peers and teachers, was a clear display of their hard work. These experiences not only improve their academic skills but also help them build a sense of responsibility and cooperation, preparing them for the future.
As we say goodbye to this school term, I want to send warm wishes to our students, families, and our entire school community for a safe and relaxing holiday season. Take this well-deserved break to rest and reflect, preparing for the adventures that await in the new year. May your holidays be filled with joy, relaxation, and time spent with loved ones. We look forward to a new year filled with growth, learning, and continued success. Wishing everyone safe and happy holidays!

Drama
On Thursday 16th the Year 10 Drama class performed Keegon Schuett's short comedy 'Count Spatula'. Mercy Hall was fully seated with approximately 130 attendees of MSB students, Year 6 Transition students, MSB staff, community visitors and parents.
The class not only consisted of students performing on stage, but also of sound technician's, curtain operators and prop designers.
"The students at Bram Stoker High used to think the school lunches sucked, but now they're more worried that the new chef, Count Spatula, might be a bloodsucker. Vanessa Helsing leads a brave team of students on a mission to rescue their classmate Mina from the Transylvanian fangs. Defeating the mysterious cook and his thirsty lunch ladies won't be easy, but these amateur vampire hunters are ready to raise the stakes and take them out. Or at least they hope they are in this parody of Bram Stoker's Dracula".

VET & Careers
Vocational Education & Training (VET)
In 2023 the college offered a wide range of Vocational course offerings, accommodating for a diverse range of student pathways.
The school was able to complete Year 10 work experience this year with 32 students successfully completed a week worth of work experience. The students went to a variety of places from local primary schools to construction, auto mechanic and park ranger. The students all received positive feedback from employers with one student starting a traineeship next year because of this work experience. This is an amazing result, and we look forward to continuing to build on these results next year.
To facilitate for students who are pursuing a practical trade-based pathway the college has offered Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, delivered onsite by TAFE QLD. Students developed a variety of skills, ranging from Occupational Health and Safety, through to operation of machinery and welding. The school has also run a few students through a White Card Course, with plans to expand on student numbers next year.
For students with a passion for sport the college offered Certificate II Sport and Recreation. Through the course, students explore the varying roles and occupational avenues in the recreation industry, whilst developing their coaching skills.
For students who have an interest in Food Technology and Hospitality we offered a Certificate I in Hospitality and a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations.
We have also facilitated a series of Health Certifications including Certificate II in Health Support Services and Certificate II in Community Services. Many of our students pursuing a pathway into the Health Industry have gained vital occupational skills and a nationally recognised qualifications, creating a strong platform for employment post- school. Students have also completed work experience in this area with the local hospital.
All students from Year 10 to Year 12 (72 students) attended the BLA Careers Expo in Cairns this year. The students were able to explore many different industries, with many competing to see who could collect the most water wrist bands. This was followed up by MSB’s Career Pathway Expo, with the highest number of industry representatives for 5 years. Many students were able to walk around the expo asking questions of industry and subject teachers. The Army, Navy and Fire departments were a big hit on the day. The whole experience helped students select their subjects or refocus their education for next year.
This year the college started to build a relationship with Australian Training Workers (ATW). This company employs students for traineeships and apprenticeships for students who are looking for a start in the mining industry.
These are some of the amazing projects that VET and Careers are offering students, with many more being built on for next year.
