Welcome Back to Our School Community!
Dear Students and Families,
We are thrilled to welcome you back to the 2025 school year! We hope you had a restful break filled with memorable moments. As we embark on this new academic journey, we are filled with enthusiasm and optimism.
Loving God,
Our creator, our saviour, our companion, bless this journey of a new school year that we undertake today.
Refresh our souls and renew our spirits as we embrace the beautiful ministry you have called us to.
We welcome those who are new to this community and ask that you strengthen them to share the wonderful gifts you have given them.
Lord, make our hearts pure as we prepare for the return of students to this school, and may you guide them to return with open hearts and minds eager to learn.
We ask this in Your name,
Amen
This year brings new opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. Our dedicated staff have prepared engaging and enriching experiences for all students, from innovative classroom activities to extracurricular programs.
As we settle into the new school year, we emphasise the importance of attending classes on time, remaining in the classroom for the entire lesson, and ensuring that individual behaviours do not disrupt the learning environment. Punctuality sets the tone for the day and shows respect for teachers and fellow students. Staying engaged throughout the entire class is essential for continuous learning and participation in discussions and activities.
Every student has the right to learn in a safe and respectful environment. Disruptive actions can hinder classmates' ability to focus and absorb information. We encourage all students to be mindful of their behaviour and contribute positively to the classroom atmosphere.
Our school community is built on the Mercy Education values of compassion, justice, respect, hospitality, service, and courage. We believe that by working together, we can create a positive and nurturing atmosphere for everyone. We encourage families to get involved, whether through volunteering, attending school events, or simply staying connected with teachers and staff. Your participation and support are invaluable to us.
We have a fantastic line-up of events and programs planned for this year. Keep an eye on our school calendar, emails, parent slips, Facebook and Instagram announcements and newsletters for updates and details.
A warm welcome to all new students and families joining our community. We are excited to have you with us and look forward to a fantastic year ahead!

We have a consistent teaching staff for 2025. Unfortunately, we have a few staff members who have been unwell for the start of the school year and this has meant a couple of classes have been covered by contract and relief staff but with staff due to return to school in the very near future, students will experience a more consistent learning environment.
We are in the process of recruiting for a new Year 7 & 8 Curriculum Leader and the permanent Assistant Principal Wellbeing and as soon as this recruitment is finalised we will communicate the successful candidates with the school community.

2025 Strategic Improvement Plan
The College has reviewed our Strategic Directions and will focus on the following goals for the 2025 school year:
- Reducing absences
- Increasing engagement
Students have already shown an impressive improvement in attending classes but there are still a small number of students who need to move to class as soon at the first bell rings. Students are very aware they need to meet a minimum of 80% attendance to be able to participate in extra curricular activities and this is proving to be a positive incentive for the students.
Commencement Assembly, Mass and Student Leader Investiture
In Week two our new Student Leaders lead the first whole school assembly for 2025. With a theme of compassion, students were able to articulate what compassion meant to them and how we can work together as a school community to model compassion to others. During this assembly the Student Leaders were formally introduced to the College community before they introduced their 2025 initiative of the “Captain Prize.” This prize was to recognise students and staff they had observed showing compassion during the start of the year. Congratulations to Rory Ross, Taylor Daley and Miss Julie Titlow who were the first worthy recipients.
We concluded the second week with our Opening Mass. This was a wonderful celebration, officiated by Fr Greg Moses. This was a momentous occasion where we were able to welcome our new Year 7 students, returning students and introduce our 2024 Student Leaders to the community. Thank you to all whom attended and joined in this important celebratory occasion with us.
Our Student Leaders for 2025 are:
- College Captains – Danielle Thiele and Nate Wagner
- Mercy Leaders – Becky Purt & Clementine Barker
- Residential Leaders – Griffin Banu, Mary Kyle-Smith, Danielle Thiele and Gariam Noah
- Sports House Leaders – Nathaniel Ghee, Jarius Lalara, Griffin Banu, Nayita Joseph, Javahn Kanak and Caitlin Murray
- Student Representative Council Leaders – Meena Riber, Laverda Charlton and Clover Charlton
We have implemented new Student Leader positions for 2025 to provide greater opportunity for student agency. The Leadership Team looks forward to working with our Student Leaders throughout the year to assist us in achieving our 2024 strategic goals.

A Heartfelt Welcome to Our Year 7s and New Students!
We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to our Year 7's and new students joining the College in 2025! These students have participated in a transition program to help them prepare for life at the College. With clear outlines of school-wide expectations and opportunities to meet their peers and make new friends, they have settled in wonderfully. We are excited to see them get involved in a variety of school activities throughout the year and become an integral part of our vibrant community. Welcome aboard!

CCTV in the Day school and Boarding Facilities
Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) devices are used in the Day School and Boarding facilities at Mount St Bernard College. CCTV surveillance within the College serves the purpose of:
- Providing additional safeguarding measures to promote a sense of safety in staff, students, and others on school grounds.
- Promoting and supporting appropriate conduct and behaviour in the school.
- Assisting in the investigation of incidents.
- Acting as a crime prevention tool, and assisting law enforcement when a crime has been committed.
The CCTV is positioned in locations that do not breach student or staff privacy. Signage is located around the College to remind staff, students and visitors of it use. The College keeps a log of footage that is required by the Leadership Team for investigation purposes.
2025 School Improvement Review
Through 2025 Mount St Bernard College will be preparing for the 5 year School review. This process enables the Catholic Education Office and the College to reflect on strengths and challenges encountered over the previous five years and develop an improvement focused plan for the next five years.
Through the year parents and carers will receive opportunities to provide feedback to assist us with this process. This information, combined with feedback from students, staff and the wider community will enable us to develop a detailed action plan that outlines specific strategies and interventions to address over the next five years.
As we reflect, plan, develop and implement this plan, we'll continuously monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to ensure success. This collaborative effort will result in the creation of a shared vision for school improvement. Our ultimate goal is to foster a positive and effective learning environment that supports every student's success. The College is looking forward to working collaboratively with you to shape a vision that becomes a reality!
Narelle Hunt - Principal
Deputy Principal Curriculum & Administration

Welcome to 2025!
Welcome back to a new school year! We are excited to see all students return and look forward to the progress and achievements that lie ahead. 2025 is set to be a fantastic year, and we can’t wait to support each of you in your learning journey.
NAPLAN for Years 7 and 9 – Week 7
In Week 7, students in Years 7 and 9 will participate in NAPLAN testing. This is an important assessment that helps teachers understand how students are progressing in key learning areas. While NAPLAN provides valuable insights for our teaching, we are prioritising meaningful learning experiences over explicit practice tests. We encourage students to try their best, as their effort helps us support their learning in the best way possible.
Electronic Diaries – A Key Tool for Success
This year, all students will use electronic diaries. These diaries contain wellbeing advice and important information about school values, and expectations. They are a great tool for keeping track of homework, assignments, and upcoming events. To make the most of your diary, check it daily, set reminders for deadlines, and plan your study time. Good organisation leads to better academic success and less stress. If you need help using your diary effectively, speak to any of your teachers.
Integrated Study Skills for Years 11 and 12
This year our Years 11 and 12 students are undertaking an Integrated Study Skills program which is designed to help senior students build the skills needed for success beyond school. This program covers study techniques, life skills, and future work skills. It also supports students in transitioning out of school by helping them prepare for further study, training, or employment. We encourage all Year 11 and 12 students to fully engage in these sessions, as they provide valuable tools for the future.
Friday Afternoon Activities – Building Friendships and Skills
This year, our timetable includes dedicated time for Friday afternoon activities. These activities help students strengthen friendships and develop important skills. By participating, students build their ‘personal and social capability’ as well as ‘critical and creative thinking’ skills. As we add new activities, we will also focus on ‘ethical understanding.’ These sessions are an exciting opportunity to develop skills, while also having fun with friends.
Supporting Students to Shine
Our goal is to support every student to achieve their best. Whether it’s improving study habits, planning assignments, or building confidence, we are here to help. If you have any questions or need support with learning, please reach out. By working together, we can support each other to let our light shine.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES

Friday Afternoon Activities Week 2 Term 1 2025

Deputy Principal Residential

We have made a positive start to 2025 with most students returning to the boarding houses in the first week. We currently have 94 students in Bernard's and Morrisey with another 20 students expected over the coming weeks. When students arrive at boarding, they sign a boarding agreement which is a document that outlines our behavioural expectations whilst students are in the boarding house. A blank copy of this document has been forwarded to all families so that parents are aware of our expectations.
In an effort to pre-empt some issues which arise within our boarding group from time to time, all parents are asked to discuss cyber safety with their children. Resources relating to Cyber safety can be found on the web at https://www.esafety.gov.au/first-nations.
Every week our boarders spend 32 hours at day school, and sample what we have to offer in the 136 hours in boarding. To keep our boarders active we offer many activities such as sports including rugby league and basketball, fishing, cooking, mountain bike riding and going to local craft markets. The photographs below show a sample of these activities.

Assistant Principal Identity & Outreach

Pope Francis has announced 2025 as a Jubilee Year, something which happens every 25 years. The theme for Jubilee 2025 is “Pilgrims of Hope”.
The Year of Jubilee comes from an Old Testament idea of a powerful celebration of renewal, justice, and restoration. It was a time when the Israelites were called to pause, reflect, and make right what was wrong. Land was returned to its original owners, debts were forgiven, and freedom was proclaimed for all. It was a sacred opportunity to restore harmony with God, others, and creation.
The concept of pilgrimage beautifully complements the Jubilee. Pilgrimage is a journey with purpose - a physical, emotional, and spiritual movement toward deeper understanding and connection with God. In many ways, Jubilee itself can be seen as a spiritual pilgrimage, where the faithful embarked on a journey of renewal and recommitment to God’s call for justice and mercy.
At Mount St Bernard College, our Mercy values of compassion, justice, respect, and courage invite us to live this spirit of Jubilee and pilgrimage in our everyday lives. We are called to walk humbly with one another, seek forgiveness, and strive for justice. Pilgrimage doesn’t always require traveling to distant places; it is often about the journey within—reflecting on our relationships with God, each other, and the world around us.
As we embark on this new year, let us embrace the essence of Jubilee. Let us find moments to pause, restore, and realign ourselves with what truly matters. May our lives reflect the courage of a pilgrim’s heart, and may we, as a community, continue to “let our light shine” as we journey together toward a more just and merciful world.

Welcome New Staff

I am very pleased to be joining the staff at Mount St Bernard’s in 2025. The position I will be undertaking is Acting Assistant Principal Wellbeing.
I commenced my teaching career in Catholic Education in 1988 and worked in a number Catholic schools across the Cairns Diocese. In 2001 I was appointed Assistant Principal Religious Education at St Therese’s Bentley Park. I held this position until 2009 when I then became Principal, firstly at St Clares Tully, then St Michael’s Gordonvale and finally at St Rita’s South Johnstone. I retired from the role of Principal in 2022 but have continued to do relief teaching since then, which I have enjoyed very much. In 2024 I worked at Mount St Bernard College as a relief teacher so am a little familiar with the school.
My qualifications include a Diploma of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education, a Graduate Diploma of Religious Education and a Masters in Educational Leadership. In 2024 I took a different direction in my learning and became qualified as a Justice of the Peace and have done some volunteer work at the Courthouse in Mareeba.
My interests include reading, going for walks, particularly in nature and going to the gym. Unfortunately I don ‘t do this as much as I should. Like most North Queenslanders I am a passionate Rugby League supporter. My team of course is the North Queensland Cowboys.
I look forward to the year ahead and to the challenges of my role within the school. Hopefully I can make a positive contribution to the culture of Mount St Bernard College.

Transition Support

Welcome to a new school year at Mount St Bernard College. Whether you are a returning family or joining us for the first time, I am thrilled to welcome you to our MSB Family and wonderful supportive school community.
Well done to all Year 7 students who have commenced their high school journey. Orientation Week saw lots of exciting challenges from navigating their way around the College, meeting new teachers and staff, receiving their laptops and books, introductions to subjects, sport and learning to follow a timetable.
Congratulations to all our Year 7 and all new students on a smooth transition and a fantastic start to the year!
Drawing our inspiration from the Gospel of Jesus and the Mercy Tradition, we empower young people through our commitment to education to become persons of faith, learning and hope, and so contribute to their communities. We are committed to the values of:
Community – living and giving gracious hospitality in the spirit of family,
Mercy – acting justly with a compassionate heart,
Respect – valuing self, others, environment and the purpose of school,
Excellence – striving towards personal best, and
Wisdom – gaining life enhancing knowledge and skills.
Within the context of these values, all students and staff at the college are expected to:
Be Safe - Be Respectful - Be Responsible

Library

The MSB Library welcomes back returning students and new students alike! As usual the library is a bustling hub of activity where students are playing games, reading, completing puzzles and enjoying the cool escape from the alternating heat and rain.
February is Library Lovers Month so to celebrate, the library offered ‘Blind Date with a Book’ in which students could borrow a gift-wrapped book while only knowing a snapshot of information about it. I then ensured that the borrower and the content/reading age matched and hopefully a love affair between borrower and book develops!
The library is open every lunch and recess, except Tuesdays, as well as before and after school most days. Senior students also have the privilege of using one of the library classrooms as a study space where they can eat their lunch and catchup on their schoolwork simultaneously.
In resourcing news, Mount St Bernard College has purchased brand new Maths, Science and Humanities textbooks for the 7-10 cohorts to support the teaching of the Australian Curriculum V9. This is a huge investment by the school to ensure that students are receiving access to current resources appropriate to the curriculum. The final batch of these are the maths textbooks, currently being covered, catalogued, and processed.

Rugby League Development Sessions
On Friday the 14th of February our first Rugby League development Session took place. Starting with the senior students we went through an introduction to the program. Not only will our senior students be taking part in development sessions, they will also be taking part in the Beyond the Posts Program, which will help students obtain their touch and refereeing qualifications. At the end of this term once the students have completed their certificates, they will have the opportunity to participate in, and run a Gala day for younger students in the Tablelands region. The junior students were able to join the seniors for a fun session which saw them strengthen their ball skills along with speed training. All students displayed respect towards each other along with a lot of encouragement and team skills.
This week two students took home some NRL merchandise that was kindly donated by Dallas Johnson. Our senior student is Nathanial Ghee and our junior student is Nate Pratt. Both of these students weer presented their awards on assembly. Well done boys, you should both be very proud of your respectful behaviour.

A Blossoming Start to the Year: Our Garden Is Flourishing!
'To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.' - Audrey Hepburn
The start of this school year has been nothing short of incredible, thanks to our fantastic bunch of students who are already making a positive impact in our school garden! From planting vibrant flowers to nurturing young vegetable plants, our students have been hands-on, ensuring that each garden bed is bursting with life. They’ve been busy clearing out weeds that accumulated over the holidays, making room for fresh growth and a bright new season of greenery. Their enthusiasm and hard work have truly set the tone for a productive year ahead!
But the work doesn’t stop there – students have been whipper snipping the garden edges to keep everything neat and tidy, and some are already harvesting the fruits of their labour. Companion planting is another exciting initiative they’ve embraced, carefully selecting plants that will thrive together in harmony. This commitment to sustainable gardening practices not only helps our environment but also fosters a sense of teamwork and responsibility among the students. We can’t wait to see how our garden continues to grow, thanks to the dedication and love our students have shown!

Workshop Wonders: A Bright Future Ahead!
This year in our workshop, we have seen some incredible growth and progress from our students. It’s clear that our learners are not only embracing the skills they’re gaining but also embodying the values of safety, respect, and responsibility. From the very start, students have shown that they are ready to take on challenges and build a strong foundation for their futures.
Our Year 8 students have kicked off their workshop journey with an exciting project—building wooden pencil cases! This hands-on project has given them a great introduction to woodworking and allowed them to develop an eye for detail, as well as patience and creativity. It’s inspiring to see their excitement as they bring their ideas to life.
Meanwhile, our Year 11 and 12 students are diving into more complex tasks, including metalworking using angle grinders and welding. These students are gaining real-life, real-world skills that will serve them well in their future careers. Not only are they learning technical expertise, but they are also gaining the confidence and problem-solving abilities that come with working with heavy machinery and intricate projects.
Among their impressive endeavours is a challenging task: building an anchor. This project pushes our senior students to refine their craftsmanship and attention to detail, as they learn skills that could easily be applied in various industries. And of course, safety is always a top priority. Our Year 11/12 students wear the correct PPE, including steel cap boots, long-sleeve high-visibility shirts, and all-cotton long pants. Safety isn’t just a rule; it’s part of the culture we are building here.
It’s clear that this is going to be a fantastic year with this wonderful group of young people. These students are not just learning how to use tools; they are gaining the skills of tomorrow’s engineers, skilled tradespeople, and innovators. Workshop skills are not just for the classroom—they are skills for life. These abilities will empower students to bring their talents back to their communities, gain employment easily, and thrive in their careers.
As we watch our students grow and succeed, we can’t help but be excited about the future. The future is bright, and it is in the hands of these young people. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and determination will make a real difference in the world.
Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and the building of future leaders!
