    Principal

    End of Term 3 Welcome

As Term 3 wraps up, I want to take a moment to say thank you and celebrate everything we’ve achieved together this term.

It’s been a big few months—full of learning, growth, and plenty of memorable moments. Our students have shown incredible resilience and enthusiasm, and that’s been made possible thanks to the ongoing support from you—our wonderful parents and community.

Whether it’s been helping get students to school each day, encouraging positive behaviour, or supporting them with homework and assignments, your involvement has made a real difference. We’ve seen students step up to challenges, get involved in extracurricular activities, and stay focused on their goals—and that’s something we can all be proud of.

Your support and advocacy for Mount St Bernard College continues to strengthen our school community. It reminds our students that they’re surrounded by people who believe in them and want to see them succeed.

As we head into the final term of the year, we’re excited to keep building on this momentum. We remain committed to providing a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment for every student.

Thank you once again for being such an important part of our school community. Wishing you all a safe, restful, and enjoyable break—you’ve earned it!

External School Improvement Review and Development of the 2026 – 2030 Strategic Plan and 2026 School Annual Improvement Plan

Mount St Bernard College recently completed an external school improvement audit, which provided valuable recommendations to help us continue building a strong, inclusive learning environment. A key focus is improving student attendance and engagement. We are working closely with staff and the wider community to review current strategies and explore new approaches that better support our students.

To ensure our teaching practices align with our goals, a professional learning plan is being developed for staff, linked directly to our improvement agenda. We will also continue our regular review of student outcomes data to identify areas where learning can be strengthened.

Consistency in teaching is another priority. Staff are working together to clarify and embed evidence-based practices across all classrooms. Differentiation—tailoring learning to meet individual student needs, is being strengthened, with teachers using data to guide planning and document adjustments.

These actions are part of the development of our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan and the 2026 School Annual Improvement Plan (SAIP). We value parent input and invite all interested families to share their voice at the Term 4 P&F meetings.

Together, we’re shaping a future where every student can thrive.

    Year 12 Formal

Year 12 students recently celebrated their formal at the Cairns Convention Centre, marking a major milestone in their final year of schooling. This special evening was a chance for students to come together, reflect on their journey, and celebrate the friendships and achievements that have shaped their time at school.

The formal was a significant event—not just for students, but for families too. Representing the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, filled with new opportunities and challenges. Seeing our students dressed with pride and confidence, surrounded by their peers and loved ones, was a powerful reminder of how far they’ve come.

For parents and carers, the night was a moment to share in their child’s success and acknowledge the support, encouragement, and guidance they’ve provided throughout the years. The atmosphere was filled with joy, laughter, and a sense of accomplishment.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 12 cohort and grateful to everyone who helped make the evening so memorable. As graduation approaches, we look forward to continuing to celebrate their achievements and supporting them as they prepare for life beyond school.

    Rewards Day for 85%+ Attendance

At Mount St Bernard College, we’re committed to building a culture where showing up is recognised and rewarded. This term, with financial support from the P&F committee, we’ve introduced a range of incentives to encourage students to reach our attendance goal of 85% or higher.

Each week, students who meet the weekly target received small rewards, helping to keep motivation high and attendance more consistent. Midway through the term, those who maintained 85%+ attendance for five weeks enjoyed a fun bowling activity. This Friday, students who have met the benchmark for the entire term will be heading off to play laser tag—a well-earned celebration of their commitment.

These activities have proven to be popular and effective in encouraging regular attendance. To support this initiative, we’re also keeping families informed. Parents and carers receive an SMS notification for every lesson their child misses, helping you stay in the loop and support your child’s progress.

We appreciate your continued support in helping us promote strong attendance habits. Together, we’re creating a learning environment where effort is recognised and success is celebrated.

    Australian Catholic Education Commission Conference

The College was proud to represent at the recent Australian Catholic Education Commission Conference held in Cairns. This major event brought together Catholic educators, leaders, and students from the Cairns Diocese to explore the future of Catholic education and celebrate the voices shaping it.

A highlight of the conference was hearing directly from students across the Cairns Diocese, including our own Year 12 student, Nathan Wagner. Nate spoke confidently and thoughtfully about the student experience, sharing insights into leadership, wellbeing, and the importance of connection within Catholic schools.

It was inspiring to see students given a platform to contribute to conversations that will influence the direction of Catholic education in Australia. Their voices added depth and authenticity to the discussions, reminding all attendees of the importance of listening to those at the heart of our schools.

We congratulate Nate and all participating students for their outstanding contributions. Their involvement reflects the strength, pride, and leadership within our MSB community. Events like the ACEC Conference highlight the value of student voice and the bright future ahead for Catholic education.

    Narelle Hunt - Principal

    Loving God,

As we come to the close of Term 3, we pause to give thanks for the learning, growth, and moments of grace shared throughout our school community. We are grateful for the strength and compassion shown by our students, staff, and families, and for the spirit of Mercy that continues to guide our journey.

Bless our students as they enter this time of rest. May the holidays be filled with joy, safety, and renewal. Grant them peace in their hearts, laughter in their homes, and time to reconnect with loved ones.

We pray for our staff, who have given so much of themselves this term. May they find rest and inspiration, and return refreshed for the term ahead.

Watch over our families, and continue to nurture the bonds that unite us in faith and care. May we carry the values of Catherine McAuley—kindness, service, and hope—into all that we do.

As we look ahead to Term 4, may we return with open hearts, ready to continue our shared mission of learning and growing together.

    Amen.

Our students are many thousands of kilometres away from home. Parental contact and support is a vital part of students being successful whilst they are at our College. Parents are encouraged to have daily contact with their children. This can done on their mobile phone or through the dedicated landlines in each dorm. Each dorm has a dedicated phone where students can make private calls if they do not wish other students to hear their calls.

A further strategy which is used by some parents is a support visit to the college. Each parent is entitled to 3 support visits a year which is funded through ABSTUDY. These visits can occur from week 3 to week 8 of each term and can be organised by Andrea Gower. At these visits, parents meet with staff during the school day and spend time with their children after 3 pm or on the weekend.

Parents are reminded that under our Child Safeguarding protocols we are not allowed to have students sleep in the same bed as other students. Our practice is to move the student with need to the bedroom opposite the student who will support them. We allow the curtains or doors to remain open and the lights to be left on.

Our goal is to support every student so that they feel safe whilst maintaining our child safeguarding protocols.

    End of Term 3 Reflections

We are now at the end of Term 3. This is always a good time to pause and reflect on how we have travelled so far this year. The holiday break is not only a chance to rest and recharge, but also an opportunity to reset and set some goals for Term 4. By taking a moment to consider what has gone well, what has been challenging, and what we would like to achieve, we can ensure that the final part of the year is both purposeful and rewarding.

Some guiding questions for students to consider during the break are:

    • Which subjects have I been most engaged in, and why?
    • Have I been staying organised with my homework and assessments?
    • What strategies could I use to manage distractions more effectively?
    • Am I balancing study with time for rest and wellbeing?
    • What is one small change I could make that would help me enjoy learning more?

    Parent–Teacher Interviews

Parent–Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 3 of Term 4 on Tuesday 21 October. Instructions for selecting a time will be sent out via a broadcast. If you are unable to attend in person, please still book an appointment and indicate that you would like it conducted via phone. These interviews are a valuable opportunity to work with your child’s teachers to celebrate progress, discuss areas for growth, and set shared goals for the term ahead.

    Interim Reports

Reports will be released at the end of this term. These are interim reports, focusing on key learning behaviours: preparation and organisation, engagement and application, and respect. These indicators are vital because they show the habits and attitudes that underpin success in all subjects.

We encourage families to take time to sit with their students and discuss these reports—celebrating strengths and identifying one or two areas for focus as we move into Term 4.  Instructions for accessing your student’s report can be found below.

Interim Reports will be  uploaded to view on the Parent Portal and Parent Portal MyCE Application.

Instructions are listed below to access your child/rens report through either the Parent Portal or MyCE Application, as well as First Time Login to the MyCE Mobile Application and MyCE User guide.

As always, please reach out to the College if required.

    Year 12 External Assessments

External Assessments for Year 12 students studying ATAR subjects are fast approaching, beginning Monday 27 October. Families of all Year 12 students will receive a broadcast with full details. As these assessments draw near, it is important that students remain consistent in their preparation. Setting up a study schedule, practising past papers, and checking in regularly with teachers are all effective strategies. Equally, balance is essential—taking time for exercise, sleep, and relaxation helps ensure energy and focus on exam days.

    Attendance Matters

The school has begun sending SMS notifications to families if a student is marked absent from class during the day. Attendance is critical—not only for keeping up with learning but also for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students. When students miss classes, it can create gaps in knowledge and habits that are difficult to repair. We ask all families to speak with their students each afternoon about how their day went and to check-in about any unexplained absences.

    Study Tip of the Week

In the last newsletter we spoke about using a timer to stay focused. Another useful tip is the “Chunk and Check” strategy. Break your study into small chunks—about 20 minutes—and after each chunk, take two minutes to check what you have just learned. This could be by summarising it out loud, jotting down key points, or testing yourself with a quick question. This simple practice reinforces learning and highlights areas that need more attention.

    Assistant Principal Wellbeing

    Dear Parents and Carers,

As we get towards the end of term 3 there are a few highlights that I would like to share from the area of Student Wellbeing.

The focus for this term has continued to be on student engagement and attendance. Whilst our level of student attendance has increased from this time last year, we still have a way to go in this area with just over 10% of students having an attendance of 90% or above for the term. It is pleasing to see that close to 18% of year 7 students have an attendance of 95% and above for this term. The number of unexplained absences is still however very high. Moving forward we have commenced a process of sending SMS messages to parents of students who have been marked unexplained for any period throughout the day.

Processes we have in place for students who do not attend classes include giving students a check in card which needs to be signed, after-school detention as well as a suspension. From last weekend we have started to introduce a Saturday morning detention. The expectation for this is that students need to attend school from 9am to 11am in full school uniform to complete set work. Saturday morning detention will continue to occur throughout next term as well.

For the students who meet the required levels of attendance we have been offering rewards as incentives. Student whose weekly attendance is 85% or above have received an incentive prize such as an ice block. This Friday we have a rewards day organised for those students who have an attendance level of 85% or above for the term. These students will be going to Laser Tag.

Members of the Wellbeing team ran a number of programs with students throughout the term.

    These programs included:

    • Friendship and Me
    • Good Blokes
    • Autistics Guide to Adulthood
    • MSB Vape Check
    • Gunja Brain Story (Drug education)
    • Making Good Choices Online
    • Positive Behaviour Support lessons to assist support class attendance

Next week, the Our Futures Vaping Prevention Program will be rolled out across the school.  The objective of the program is to develop students’ knowledge, understanding and skills required to make responsible decisions about e-cigarette use (vaping). It provides an opportunity for students to practice strategies and skills required to reduce e-cigarette-related harm to themselves and others. The program has been co-designed with students and teachers.  It uses a realistic cartoon-based drama to impart knowledge that is based on the principles of effective drug education. Scenarios based on the real-life experiences of young people are integrated into teaching and learning activities to help students deal with future e-cigarette-related situations in a safe and responsible way.

Next week we will also be conducting RU OK Day activities. This will include our Monday assembly focusing on RU OK followed by a shared lunch in the dining hall for all students and staff. Then on Thursday 18th September we will hold a day focusing on RU OK Day activities.

We are very pleased to have Gail Mabo as a guest speaker for RO UK day on Thursday September 18th.  Gail has connections to both Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal students currently attending MSB. She is the daughter of legendary land rights campaigner, Eddie Mabo, and educator and activist Bonita Mabo.  Gail was formerly a dancer, choreographer and actor, who in 2005 directed Koiki, a stage production based on the life of her father. Gail is also a visual artist, whose work has been exhibited in galleries both in Australia and abroad and she is a founding member of the Murris in Ink artist collective, a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in North Queensland. Gail, who has previously worked as a cultural advisor in New South Wales schools has a passion for storytelling and empowering "the next" generation. We certainly look forward to her being at MSB for the RU OK Day.

Congratulations to the following students who received Certificates of Merit for their behaviour throughout the term:

In recognition of displaying safe behaviours - Apia Joe-Gela

In recognition of displaying responsible behaviours - Apia Joe-Gela, Edna Anau, Avalon Waltham, Kailyn Josiah, Zolandra Brumby, Reece Pugh, Yehara Edirising, Ramona Yellub & Kimberley Gothakchalkenim

In recognition of displaying respectful behaviours - Avalon Waltham, Mahalia Creek & Hayley Baker

I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday.

At Book Week this year, I had the joy (and the challenge – as I forgot I was on bus duty!) of dressing up as St Francis of Assisi. It felt especially fitting because 2025 marks 800 years since Francis composed his Canticle of Creation—a hymn of praise that celebrates the goodness of all God’s creation: Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Brother Fire, Sister Water. Though written in 1225, the message is even more urgent for us today.

In 2015, Pope Francis took inspiration from St Francis’ Canticle when he wrote Laudato Si’, an encyclical letter addressed, not just to Catholics, but “to every person living on this planet.” Its title means “Praise be to you, my Lord,” the opening words of the Canticle. The letter calls us to care for our common home, reminding us that everything is connected: people, environment, justice, and the generations yet to come.

Laudato Si’ challenges us to resist the “throwaway culture” of consumerism. It asks us to pause before every purchase: Do I really need this? Could I repair, reuse, or repurpose what I already have? Could I share with others? And it reminds us that our worth—and the worth of those around us—should never be judged by possessions.

From 1 September (the World Day of Prayer for Creation) until 4 October (the Feast of St Francis), Christians across the world join in the Season of Creation. This is an ecumenical celebration—embraced by many Christian traditions—where we pray, reflect, and act for our common home. It’s a time to give thanks for creation, to lament the damage we have caused, and to commit ourselves to change.

It can feel overwhelming to face the environmental challenges of our time. Yet Laudato Si’ reminds us that small actions do matter. Choosing to consume less, to waste less, to recycle, to repair, and to be mindful about what we buy makes a real difference—not just to the planet, but also to the witness we give to others. Together, our small steps add up to a movement of hope and renewal.

As St Francis showed us 800 years ago, creation itself is a song of praise to God. May our lives echo that same song today.

Supreet Kaur - Year 9 entry in Caritas Australia Catholic Earthcare Season of Creation Art Competition 2025. This year’s theme, “Peace with Creation”, invites us to reflect on our call to live in harmony with the Earth and one another. Finalists and winners will be announced by Friday, 26th September 2025 – so stay tuned!

Year 12 Religion & Ethics Teddy Bears’ Picnic

As part of their final assessment, our Year 12 Religion and Ethics students brought stories to life for the Prep–Year 1 students of St Teresa’s School, Ravenshoe, at a joyful Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The task required students to recreate or reimagine a sacred story, present it to a young audience, and then reflect on how their storytelling could be improved. With creativity and courage, they shared stories such as The Rainbow Serpent, Tiddalik, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jonah and the Big Fish, the story of the Glass House Mountains, a tale from Papua New Guinea, and stories and songs from the Torres Straits.

It was a wonderful day of learning, laughter, and connection. The younger students delighted in the stories, and our Year 12s shone in their roles as storytellers and role models.

A heartfelt thank you to Vicky and the kitchen staff for preparing the delicious sandwiches and lamingtons that made the picnic extra special.

Everyone went home smiling, the young ones with teddy bears in hand, and the older ones with hearts a little fuller.

As this term draws to a close, I wanted to let our Mount St Bernard College community know that I will be taking Long Service Leave next term.

It has been a joy and a privilege to walk alongside our students, staff, and families throughout this year—whether in classrooms, assemblies, liturgies, or out and about. I am constantly inspired by the way our community lives out our motto, “Let Your Light Shine,” in both small and significant ways.

Next term I will be stepping back for a season of rest and renewal (with some exciting travel adventures ahead!) before returning refreshed and ready for the beginning of the 2026 school year.

I thank you all for your ongoing support of Mount St Bernard College and for the many ways you contribute to making this a vibrant and faith-filled community. Please keep our staff and students in your prayers next term—I will be keeping you in mine.

May God’s mercy shine upon you always.

Write A Book In A Day!

On Tuesday 9th September, nine MSB students took part in Australia’s most inspiring writing competition: Write a Book in A Day! In this creative teamwork challenge, the students work together to write and illustrate a book using unique parameters given on the day to guide their original piece. Each book is then made available to kids in hospitals around Australia while funds raised support cancer research and work to get kids out of hospitals and back into the classroom.

MSB has taken part in this challenge through their creative writing team the White Cockatoos since 2016! Cracking into the challenge at 8:30am the team are working tirelessly discussing options and styles. As I type, the process continues with crafting, revising, and creating.

Please keep your eyes out for the final title and please donate to a very worthy cause, The Kids Cancer Project! Wish us luck in the competition.

The 2025 MSB White Cockatoos team: Griffin Banu, Clover Charlton, Laverda Charlton, Maya Hutton, Rotannah Joe-Gela, Meenakshi Riber, Danielle Thiele, Chelsea Webb, Zena Belkessa. A huge thanks to Mrs Sarah Riber who organised the event.

    Growing Gardens Galore

At MSB Agriculture, our students are learning valuable lessons beyond planting and harvesting. Each day, they care for their garden beds with dedication, growing vibrant tomatoes, pumpkins, papayas and marigolds that brighten the space.

We have many bees and other pollinators which is a symbol of a healthy ecosystem and a reminder of nature’s delicate balance. By creating a habitat which invites these beings to be part of garden, we can give back to nature, who gives us so much.

Many students take personal responsibility for their plots, putting in the time to nurture their plants. Through gardening, they develop patience, care, and problem-solving skills that will serve them well in life.

We encourage families to connect with nature at home—whether planting, composting, or observing wildlife—continuing the journey our students have begun.

Crafting Futures, One Timber Project at a Time

As the school year progresses, the MSB Workshop buzzes with creativity and determination. It’s not just the sound of tools—it’s students shaping their futures through hands-on timber projects.

Our program thrives on hard work and skill development. Year 9 and 10 students are building timber graphics cases featuring intricate finger and box joints, sharpening their precision and patience. Seniors in Years 11 and 12 are crafting stools and cabinets from beautiful timber, producing pieces that blend functionality with artistic craftsmanship.

These projects teach valuable lessons in focus, perseverance, and attention to detail—skills that will benefit students in any future path, from building to design and beyond.

As their projects take shape, so do their dreams. We’re proud of their dedication and can’t wait to see how far their hard work will carry them.

    Music in Practice

The focus of the Term 3 unit of work was Commercial music. Students were given the choice between writing and recording a jingle for an imaginary product as a radio ad, or redesigning and recording a soundtrack of a short film scene.

Four extraordinarily creative projects occurred. The year 12 band WeHateLoveSongs created a jingle for ‘Highland Juice’, Annika from Year 11 created a jingle for ‘Williamson’s Door Handles’. Library

Monopoly, cards, and laptop games have been keeping students very busy in the library at break times this term and students have been building their puzzle skills now happily piecing together 1000 piece challenges. Students have also been excited by some of our new books with the Avatar The Last Air Bender series and the Minecraft Stones Word Saga being the most popular reads!

Of course the biggest literary event for term 3 is Book Week! The theme for 2025 was ‘Book an Adventure’ and the library hosted some competitions to get the students excited about reading. In the week leading up to Book Week, students worked together and individually to create beautiful fantasy or adventure maps complete with coffee staining and literary references in the names of landmarks etc. Rory Ross won first place for his very detailed map with Meenakshi Riber winning second and Jack Jones coming in third with his digital creation of the Land of Herthia. The poster competition was won by Laverda Charlton with a beautiful and tactile poster, Supreet Kaur took second place and Meenakshi won third place for her digital artwork.

The annual Book Week parade was held on Friday with great success. Students dressed up as characters from various books with excellent props. First place went to Clementine Barker and Danielle Thiele for their Handmaid’s Tale costumes. Second place went to Rory Ross for his interactive handmade Box Trolls costume, and third place went to Meenakshi Riber for her Cyborg character from Cinder.

A huge thanks goes out to the staff and students who participated and supported the events. Book Week is a chance to shine the spotlight on the joys of reading and celebrating new Australian titles. We are very lucky at Mount St Bernard College to have a lovely library space that is not only welcoming but takes time to celebrate students and staff from all backgrounds. I look forward to continuing and building on this tradition well into the future!
